Rose Parade, Rose Bowl Employ New Technology To Protect Crowds From Vehicle Mitigation

Vehicle barriers at Rose Bowl Stadium

Security officials expand use of Archer 1200 barriers at stadium and key parade locations. Barriers stop vehicles yet maintain pedestrian and emergency access.

Of course, we are concerned about ensuring that pedestrians and vehicles are safely separated.”

— Pasadena Police Lieutenant Sean Dawkins

PASADENA, CA, US, December 27, 2018 / — With hundreds of thousands of spectators expected to attend the 2019 Tournament of Roses Parade and game, Pasadena Police and security executives are calling on the latest in vehicle mitigation technology to protect crowds.

For the first time, Pasadena Police are extending the use of Meridian Rapid Defense Group’s Archer 1200 portable vehicle barrier to key areas around the perimeter of the parade. The engineered steel barrier was successfully used last year at the main entrance of the Rose Bowl Stadium. Deployments this year have been expanded to multiple locations. They can be seen by the public at the Rose Bowl Stadium or the parade route at Colorado and Orange Grove Bridge.

Protecting attendees during the city’s highest profile event is a daunting task – one that is complicated by the mix of pedestrians and vehicles sharing access to many of the city’s streets.

“We will have more than 700,000 people lining the parade route and traveling on foot through the downtown area,” said Pasadena Police Lieutenant Sean Dawkins. “Of course, we are concerned about ensuring that pedestrians and vehicles are safely separated.”

The Archer 1200 barrier is a certified solution meeting both U.S. and European standards of protection. A particular benefit for an event like the parade festivities is that the barriers stop vehicles without impeding the free flow of pedestrian foot traffic.

“It is very important for us to strike a balance,” said Rose Bowl Stadium Chief Operating Officer George Cunningham. “Public safety is our number one priority. The Archer 1200 solution allows us to use state of the art protection and still have the ability to efficiently admit nearly 100,000 visitors into the stadium.”

With hostile vehicle attacks on the rise worldwide, municipal police and security operatives must develop comprehensive plans for any event drawing significant outdoor crowds. Often times, cities must resort to using ad hoc measures that are not tested for effectiveness. These include cement rails and plastic water barriers which are designed to keep cars on the freeway as well as public vehicles like trash trucks, fire engines, and squad cars. The latter poses a significant risk of equipment costs should an incident occur.

“Cities know there is a real need for protection,” said Peter Whitford, CEO of Pasadena-based Meridian Rapid Defense Group, the manufacturer of the Archer 1200. “We designed our product to address the real technology void in HVM (hostile vehicle mitigation). Beyond the first step which is certified performance, our barriers offer ease of deployment and flexibility. This allows law enforcement to place the barriers where needed and react to any change in threat level.”

The Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Stadium will be utilizing more than 65 barrier units across four high-access locations. This more than doubles the fleet used for the 2018 Rose Bowl Game. Placement of the barriers restricts non-authorized access but also allows for entry of emergency vehicles if required.

The Tournament of Roses Parade and Rose Bowl Game take place on January 1, 2019. For more information about Meridian Rapid Defense Group or the Archer 1200 Vehicle Barrier, visit

New drone regulations put Zuppa’s growth plans on fast track; to raise USD 10 million

Founder & CEO

It has raised USD 1 million from IndiaNivesh Special Situations and Growth Fund and MapMyIndia

MUMBAI, MAHARASHTRA, INDIA, December 27, 2018 / — New drone regulations put Zuppa’s growth plans on fast track

Company planning to raise about USD10 million funds in the next few months to fuel its expansion plans.

Already raised USD1 million from IndiaNivesh Special Situations and Growth Fund and MapMyIndia

Mumbai, December 27: Drone manufacturer Zuppa is planning to raise about USD10 million funds over the next few months to fuel its expansion plans. The company’s plans comes after the Union government recently came out with new regulations on the use of drones by private citizens by lifting a 2014 ban.

Zuppa, owned by Chennai-based Sree Sai Aerotech Innovations Pvt. Ltd. (SSAI), plans to use the funds to scale up its existing products that have been developed using its proprietary technology and penetrate existing markets.

The expansion plans include developing newer applications for its core drone technology and service the jump in demand for its AIS 140 compliant Vehicle Tracking and Telematics Systems (VTS), which are mandated by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MORTH) as well as among automobile OEMs.

Zuppa’s founder Sai Pattabiram said, “Our bankers have identified few VCs and strategic investors and we look at closing the funding round in the next two quarters and the company has already raised USD1 million from IndiaNivesh Special Situations and Growth Fund and MapMyIndia, a GPS navigation and tracking solution provider.”

Pattabiram said that the company is now ready to expand in its core drone manufacturing space after the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) came out with the new set of regulations which came into effect from first of this month. The regulation classifies remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) or drones as nano, micro, small, medium and large drones along with the do’s and dont’s of flying these drones.

He added that “Zuppa designs and manufactures its drones in India and also have a global patent for their drone technology. The company is a process of manufacturing an aeroplane-like drone (about one meter in length) that can be used to map larger areas in a shorter time and can be used in mapping and monitoring agricultural lands. Pattabiram said such drone can monitor 1000 acres of land in just one flight.”
The Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had come out with a new set of regulations in August this year and the same has come into effect from December 1. The Company is actively engaging with Civil Aviation authorities being the only manufacturer of Drones in India to ensure successful implementation of the regulations and the future of the drone industry in India.

About Zuppa:
Sree Sai Aerotech Innovations Pvt. Ltd. (SSAI), was founded in the year 2008, by a father-son duo, Sai Pattabiram and Venkatesh Sai. The Company has developed embedded tech products based on its own proprietary patented technology and aims to increase the efficiency and reliability of various traditional embedded electronic systems in the industry.
SSAI has successfully developed various applications by adapting its’ proprietary cutting-edge drone technology including:
• GPS land Levellers
• Vehicle Tracking & Telematics Systems (VTS)
• Industrial IoT and data transmission Solution
• Low-cost Genset Automation System for remote operation of Diesel Gensets

Fruitful 2018 Heralds Positive Change for Signature Gives Back, Inc.

Walking the Gleneagles Course for Nov. 8 SGB Inaugural Charity Golf Tournament

The Signature Real Estate Companies Proudly Endorsing Efforts of Grassroots Signature Gives Back, Building on REALTOR® Volunteerism and Charitable Giving

Be the Change You Wish to See in This World.”

— Wendy Pressner

DELRAY BEACH, FL, UNITED STATES, December 25, 2018 / — Boca Raton, FL, Dec. 21, 2018— Signature Gives Back, Inc. (SGB), the philanthropic outreach of The Signature Real Estate Companies (Signature), has continued its growth pattern in 2018, garnering the national attention of charities interested in its grassroots approach and participating REALTOR® volunteerism. SGB’s goodwill measures up to a report from the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR), a December study indicating REALTORS®, in general, donate more money than the average American to charitable causes/organizations.

SGB has been very active with various fundraisers addressing real-time needs, including the tragedies at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Parkland, FL, and Tree of Life Synagogue, Pittsburgh, PA, and the housing expenses of two families devastated by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. SGB has been proactive as well, addressing the continual needs for volunteers and funding for local charities and causes.

Its most successful 2018 event, SGB’s Inaugural Charity Golf Tournament, Nov. 8, 2018 at Gleneagles Country Club, Delray Beach (to benefit both SGB and UnLIMBited Foundation), was wildly popular with participating golfers and Cocktail Reception attendees from Signature and the greater South Florida community.

“Our golfers enjoyed themselves immensely and expressed their appreciation as to how organized and entertaining the event was, especially considering that it was our inaugural tournament, says Event Co-Chair Jack Jaiven. He attributes the event’s rousing success to his hard-working and creative team, including Event Co-Chairs Ivan M Benjamin, Jr., Melainey Gunning, Robert Gleichenhaus and Wendy Pressner, who worked tirelessly for the worthiest of causes: children and their families.

Auction Chairs Gayle Elliott, Judith LeComte, Rachel Gleichenhaus, and Sung Knowles produced a “beautifully arranged Silent Auction that included several valuable travel packages, attractive golf foursomes, sports memorabilia, and many other valuable delights,” says Jaiven. A number of signed celebrity auction items curated by the Signature team—including those donated by a band member of Judas Priest and golf great Jack Nicklaus—were the centerpieces that anchored the highly successful live auction.

Produced in a brief five-month window, SGB’s charity golf tournament netted more than $20,000, a standout achievement for the relatively young 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit. SGB awarded a significant grant from the event proceeds to the UnLIMBited Foundation’s “Tommy Fund.” Tommy Morrissey, the renowned 8-year-old, one-arm golf prodigy, who was Guest of Honor at the tournament, was featured by local ESPN and WPTV-5 news shortly after the event.

Earlier in the year, SGB dedicated three grants, to KidSafe Foundation, Wayne Barton Study Center, and one that was life-changing to the family of a teenage survivor of the tragic Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. The group continues to collect from the sales of its #PittsburghStrong #EndHate wristbands for the surviving family
members of those killed during an anti-Semitic attack on members of the Tree of Life Congregation.

With recognition and gratitude for the exceptional leadership and dedication of Wendy Pressner (former SGB Committee Co-Chair) during her nearly three-year tenure, Jaiven, Executive Vice President of The Signature Real Estate Companies and VicePresident of SGB’s Board of Directors recently welcomed Dana Levy and Karen Evans as his two new SGB Committee Co-Chairs; The trio has initiated a number of new strategies for selecting its charitable causes for future grants.

With its pulse on the health and well-being of South Florida’s individuals and families, SGB continues to “Be the Change You Wish to See in This World.” For more trending info, please visit, and email

Steven R. Pietro reveals support for homeless veterans

Steven Pietro 1

Florida businessman Steven R. Pietro shares support for troubled veterans as homelessness figures continue to rise.

WEST PALM BEACH, FLORIDA, USA, December 24, 2018 / — According to figures from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, upwards of 40,000 U.S. veterans are estimated to be homeless on any particular night, with a further 1.4 million veterans in the country considered at risk of homelessness, according to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans. Here, law graduate and businessman Steven R. Pietro reveals he and his company's support for homeless veterans as well as addressing insufficient affordable housing, a lack of adequate and available support networks, alcohol and substance abuse, and serious mental health issues among veterans.

"The percentage of homelessness among veterans has risen greatly in recent years," reveals Pietro, "such as in Palm Beach, for example, where the number of homeless veterans is estimated to have increased by as much as 70 percent."

Assisting veterans who suffer with alcohol and substance abuse, mental health issues, and medicine management in an effort to help curb many of the problems associated with homelessness, Pietro is also working to aid in job creation for veterans. "Many people will give $10 to a program or agency and think it will make an impact," he reveals. “And while that may be admirable and even generous we think that this problem has exacerbated to an almost crisis mode and to mitigate the damage requires a more grass-roots, hands-on approach.”

“To do a selfless act that requires only a desire to reach out and help a Veteran and to see the smile on her or his face is all the reward I need, personally," Pietro adds.

Steven R. Pietro is owner and founder of Justice Government Supply, Inc., a Native American service-disabled veteran owned business proudly serving the women and men of the U.S. armed forces with a complete catalog of the finest steaks, roasts, select butcher chops and more across the globe.

Homelessness among veterans in the U.S. is largely tied to unemployment, as Pietro explains. "Unemployment among veterans is a complicated matter," he says, "whereby military occupations and training, at times, fail to translate well directly into civilian workforce positions."

"As a result," he continues, "it's not unusual for veterans to find themselves at a disadvantage when seeking employment beyond the military, despite largely unrivaled standards of discipline and commitment, as well as corresponding work ethics."

Pietro also points out that homelessness among veterans often has additional underlying causes and effects. "Thrust back into an unfamiliar way of life," he explains, "veterans often struggle to reintegrate which can lead to issues surrounding mental health and well-being, making finding work difficult, and contributing to an unfortunate prevalence of substance and alcohol abuse among veterans."

Accordingly, Steven Pietro wishes to further assist in supporting and finding valuable, skilled work for veterans, something which he says affords many veterans a feeling of purpose, a healthy source of income, and, as a result, helps to prevent against unnecessary cases of homelessness.

Currently, law graduate and businessman Pietro is seeking to drive employment opportunities and facilitate work for veterans via strategic partnerships with local, often also veteran-owned businesses and organizations. "These partnerships," he adds, wrapping up, "shall also seek to address issues pertaining to affordable housing and look to highlight the importance of understanding the many social challenges often faced by our country's incredible veterans in the process."

3d Edition of Poopie Suits & Cowboy Boots Released
Ride a ‘Horse – Underwater!!
Imagine – riding a Nuclear Submarine – Day-to-Day

Books on nuclear submarines tend to focus on secret missions, intrigue, and hair-raising moments.

Poopie Suits & Cowboy Boots, by comparison, tells the true coming-of-age story of a young US Navy officer who volunteers to serve onboard a state-of-the-art nuclear submarine in the late 1960s during the height of the Cold War. The narrative follows his journey from intense training to deployment aboard the USS Seahorse (SSN-669), where he eventually earns his coveted Dolphins, the proud insignia of those who earn the distinction, “Qualified in Submarines”. Along the way, the reader will learn in highly readable detail about the inner workings of an attack submarine: sonar, buoyancy, periscope, torpedoes, nuclear power, crew organization, and a general sense of what daily life aboard such a vessel was like.

Told in a style that is easily understandable by veterans and civilians alike, Poopie Suits and Cowboy Boots covers the waterfront of human emotions: Anticipation. Uncertainty. Fear. Anger. Sadness. Traveling to destinations around the world, the book is replete with many stories—some hair-raising, some wistful, and others hilarious. Also, many of the key cultural touchstones of that era—including the space program, the Vietnam War, and even the Super Bowl—are folded into the story to give the reader a true sense of what it was like to grow up during that era.

The authors have dedicated ALL PROCEEDS from the book to the United States Submarine Veterans, Inc. (USSVI) Scholarship Fund. Since the first edition appeared in January of 2018, the total amount donated has exceeded $13,000.

At 480 pages, the 3rd Edition of Poopie Suits and Cowboy Boots is the most complete version yet. With over 100 annotated period photographs, a complete glossary that translates submarine lingo, and the benefit of informed input for all chapters by dozens of willing submarine veterans who recognized the value of this effort, this version gives the reader an unparalleled front-row seat into the day-to-day routine inside a nuclear submarine. The 3rd Edition also includes 19 new submarine historical essays, placed between chapters, to broaden the historical appeal. Read about trailing Russian nukes, conducting ‘normal’ sea ops, firing torpedoes, navigational mishaps, traveling under the polar ice cap, and visiting ports-of-call. Learn about how the food, oxygen, and water requirements were met for surviving underwater for more than 100 days in a row. And get a glimpse into the immense psychological pressures of performing such dangerous work. “Poopie Suits and Cowboy Boots” fills a niche that has been lacking in sufficient coverage for many years. Although written through one man’s eyes, this long-overdue story speaks to the experiences of every man (or woman today) who has volunteered for the nuclear submarine force. The “Silent Service”, as it is known, maintains our mighty sea defenses even today.

The book is easily ordered by going to . For a limited time, the normal price of $20 for a soft cover has been reduced to $15. This includes a generous donation to the Sub Vet Scholarship Fund. Get your copy today! The book also makes a wonderful gift for that veteran or historian in your life.

Serial Entrepreneur Gianluca De Novi, Ph.D. brings XSurgical to the US; will lead company as Chief Executive Officer

Gianluca De Novi

Cambridge, MA firm will build and market unique surgical robots that can be controlled remotely by surgeons

As a company, we will be focused on the crucial aspects of delivering the best surgical robotics technology in critical environments.”

— Gianluca De Novi

CAMBRIDGE, MA, US, December 18, 2018 / — Gianluca De Novi, Ph.D., a serial entrepreneur and a faculty member at Harvard Medical School, has brought the Italian company XSurgical, a firm specializing in surgical robotics, to the United States, with the objective of developing new cutting-edge products in this domain.

DeNovi, a native of the small Italian town Bernalda in Basilicata, Italy, has built and run a number of successful ventures in Italy. While there, he scouted a number of interesting forward-thinking companies, seeking to find an exceptional venture to bring to the United States. His efforts led him to XSurgical (originally Surgica Robotica); and, after a period of due diligence, he determined that the market in the United States was right for this venture.

De Novi will lead XSurgical, now headquartered in Cambridge, as the firm’s Chief Executive Officer. In this capacity, he will work with investors, business leaders, and organizations in the development of a new product. XSurgical is building and will bring to market a remotely controlled surgical robot, which can be deployed in situations of disaster recovery, battlefield and even travels into space. The surgical robot will be able to perform open surgery and minimally invasive surgery, guided by surgeons from remote locations. The concept has received strong reviews from the military and the Department of Defense. XSurgical is also working to develop the artificial intelligence to compensate the communication delays initially and make subsequent robots fully autonomous.

DeNovi, who now resides in Cambridge, MA, brings a strong background in engineering and science to his latest entrepreneurial role. A faculty member at the Harvard Medical School, he earned his Master’s Degree in Electronics Engineering and his PhD in Robotics and Control Systems from the University of Bologna in Italy. While there, he also worked at the Laboratory of Automation and Robotics. After spending one year as a visiting researcher at the bio-robotics laboratory of Harvard’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, he completed his postdoctoral fellowship in medical simulation at the Department of Imaging at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA.

In 2013 he became an instructor at Harvard Medical School in 2013. During the last few years he has also dedicated part of his academic life to teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. De Novi has also acted as scientific consultant to many leading corporations and research institutions.

Dr. De Novi's interest in surgical robotics and computer-based surgery simulation began with exploration of cutting edge technologies for graphic and haptic rendering and developing studies in these domains. He has additionally concentrated his research interests on physical simulation of soft tissues, creating novel models and approaches optimized for haptic rendering. During his postdoctoral fellowship he focused his interests on other crucial aspects of surgery simulation, such as real-time gesture analysis and task recognition and augmented reality.

De Novi has been a scientific and strategic advisor at ADM Tronics Unlimited Inc. since May 2015 and served as a member of its Strategic and Scientific Advisory Board since September 2014. In 2013 the PrimiDieci Society and the Italy-America Chamber of Commerce recognized De Novi as one of the ten most distinguished Italian Professionals in the United States under the age of 40.

“I am honored to take the lead in bringing XSurgical through the finish line bringing the surgical robotics where no one else did before” said De Novi. “As a company, we will be focused on the crucial aspects of delivering the best surgical robotics technology in critical environments.”

About XSurgical
XSurgical, based in Cambridge, MA, is a pioneer in the field of mobile surgical robotics.
