Belgium Set to Acquire NASAMS Air Defense System in 2027
De Wever disclosed that the initial battery has already been formally ordered, according to a news agency, which cited reporting from Gazet van Antwerpen. Once operational, the system will be capable of shielding approximately two-thirds of the strategically vital Port of Antwerp-Bruges, one of Europe's busiest maritime hubs.
Designed to neutralize a wide spectrum of aerial threats — including unmanned aerial vehicles, helicopters, cruise missiles, unmanned combat aerial vehicles, and fixed-wing aircraft — NASAMS provides both short- and medium-range defense coverage.
Further procurement is already in the pipeline. A second battery, expected in subsequent years, would extend full protection across the entire port complex and surrounding critical infrastructure, including nearby nuclear power stations, the report indicated.
De Wever also confirmed the government has moved to procure a dedicated anti-drone system — a direct response to a surge of unexplained drone incursions recorded last year over high-risk locations, among them chemical plants and cargo terminals.
The announcements signal an accelerating push by Belgium to close longstanding gaps in its air defense posture amid heightened security concerns across Europe.
