Taiwan Moves to Toughen Penalties for Military Service Evasion

(MENAFN) Taiwan has put forward proposed legal changes aimed at reinforcing its mandatory military service system, including a stricter punishment framework for those who attempt to avoid conscription, according to reports.

The proposal would introduce a minimum one-year prison sentence for individuals who evade compulsory military service. It would also increase penalties for men who deliberately postpone enlistment until they become ineligible due to age.

As stated by reports, the Interior Ministry said the initiative was influenced by several recent high-profile incidents involving entertainers who were accused of dodging military service obligations.

The ministry stressed that military service is a constitutional duty for eligible men, noting that there have been cases where conscripts extended their stay abroad beyond permitted periods, intentionally injured themselves, or altered their physical condition in order to avoid service—actions that have drawn widespread public concern.

Officials argued that current penalties have not been strong enough to deter such behavior.

Under existing legislation, those found guilty of evading military service can face prison sentences of up to five years. However, the ministry noted that in many cases the outcomes are relatively lenient, including deferred prosecution, decisions not to prosecute, or short prison terms of six months or less, which can often be converted into fines.
